The first record of settlement in this area was in
1030 when it was called Castellarium.
Because of its strategic position and good communication routes, Le
Castellet has been an important site throughout history and was part of the
Celto-Ligurian period and later the Gallo-Roman Empire.
The village has retained some
of its fortified look, with sections of the ancient ramparts still there, along
with a couple of the old fortified gates.
The view from the 15th century
château that currently houses the town hall is breathtaking. From there, you will have an exceptional
panoramic view of the Sainte Baume massif as well as the vines and the
vineyards that make the excellent and famous wines of Bandol AOC.
In the village around lunch or
dinner time, you will inevitably succumb to the delicate aromas of Provençal
cooking of tomatoes, garlic, herbs of Provence and will have a difficult time
resisting the call of the many restaurant terraces scattered all over the village.
The Castellet is proud to have been the set for the French cult film “La Femme du Boulanger” (The Baker's Wife) starring the famous French actor Raimu directed by its the famous French writer and film director Marcel Pagnol.
