Algeria

Each year, since 2010, I have visited the North West coastal region of Algeria between Arzew and Mers-el-Kébir where I was born and spent my early years during the French occupation of that country.  After Algeria gained its independence in 1962, most of the French population living there left the country and returned to France.   Most of my family had lived in Mers-el-Kébir for four generations and some members stayed there until 1967 when the French government finally withdrew and evacuated its strategic naval base.

In 2010, after 43 years, I returned to Mers-el-Kébir and caught up with my best friend Kader whom I hadn’t seen since 1967.  I revisited the house where I lived and grew up, my Primary School and many other places filled with the memories of my early years there.  Since 2010, some members of my family have also returned to the old country with me.
